    Background

    The Australian Industry and Skills Committee (AISC) has commissioned the review of the MAR Maritime Training Package with the objective to incorporate the Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s (AMSA) certification requirements and strengthen assessment requirements.

    The project will ensure seafarers will have met all certification requirements and prepare them for the final AMSA assessment, prior to AMSA issuing the seafarer with a Certificate of Competency or Proficiency.

    This project includes:

    Four New Skill Sets

    • Able Seafarer Deck
    • Able Seafarer Engine
    • Roll on/Roll off and passenger ship operations
    • International code of safety for ships operating in polar waters

    Engineering Operations

    • MAR30115 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Steam)
    • MAR50115 Diploma of Maritime Operations (Engineer Watchkeeper)
    • MAR50613 Diploma of Maritime Operations (Marine Engineering Class 3 Near Coastal)
    • MAR60115 Advanced Diploma of Maritime Operations (Marine Engineering Class 2)
    • MAR60215 Advanced Diploma of Maritime Operations (Marine Engineering Class 1)

    Deck Operations

    • MAR30116 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Integrated Rating)
    • MAR30215 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Surveying)
    • MAR40115 Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Marine Surveying)
    • MAR40116 Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Chief Integrated Rating)
    • MAR50215 Diploma of Maritime Operations (Marine Surveying)
    • MAR50315 Diploma of Maritime Operations (Watchkeeper Deck)
    • MAR50415 Diploma of Maritime Operations (Master up to 500 GT)

    Leardership Skills

    This project covers the revision of seven Units of Competency to ensure currency of leadership and management skills for seafarers.

    The seven Units of Competency being reviewed are:

    • MARG002 Manage a small crew
    • MARG006 Manage a vessel and its crew
    • MARG003 Manage an engine room and small engineering team
    • MARD001 Manage business and administration on vessels limited by tonnage or near coastal operations
    • MARD003 Manage legal requirements of a vessel
    • MARM001 Apply knowledge of safety management system legal framework in the workplace
    • MARF022 Apply maritime resource management principles

    The Maritime Industry Reference Committee (IRC) will have oversight of this project, which will be facilitated by Australian Industry Standards (AIS) in consultation with industry stakeholders. A Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) will be formed for this project.
